Hello!
My name is Rachel Eken and I am thrilled to be able to serve the human and animal community of Colorado Springs. As a native Wisconsinite, I vow never to take the beautiful mountains for granted.
Besides growing up in the Midwest, I also grew up around dogs and horses and have always had a passion for animals. When it came time to go to college, I opted to study Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, instead of going to veterinary school due to the surgical aspect of veterinary practice. My life changed when my Portuguese water dog was diagnosed with a very severe case of Lymes disease. After a clean spinal tap and x-rays, I had a choice to make on how to treat him. I chose chiropractic to help my dog walk again. Since he could not walk, I carried Hogan in to my chiropractor’s office and he was able to walk himself back to my car after his first adjustment. When Hogan was diagnosed, it tugged on my heart so deeply, risking having my best friend not be the same happy-go-lucky pup every day. Although Hogan’s results were not typical, I decided then that if I could help animals without the use of medication or surgery, I wanted to do what my mentor, Dr. Dawn VandeCastle, had done for my pal.
In order to become certified in animal chiropractic, one has to either be a Veterinarian or a Doctor of Chiropractic. So, after graduating from UW-Stevens Point, I matriculated into Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa to earn my degree to treat humans there. I chose Palmer due to its heavy emphasis on holistic healing. After nine of my ten trimesters of Chiropractic School I double enrolled at Healing Oasis Wellness Center in Sturtevant, Wisconsin. Healing Oasis is the only accredited Animal Chiropractic program that is certified by the US Department of Education. Healing Oasis is a rigorous 226 hour post doctorate program with a heavy focus on functional neurology. It was an honor to learn from Dr. Pedro Rivera while at that school.
Prior to and during my college career, I devoted all my spare time to my pets. I showed American Saddlebreds for many years throughout high school and college. My focus then shifted to my Portuguese Water Dogs Hogan and Page. I compete in conformation, water training, agility, dock diving, obedience and rally as frequently as I can.
I look forward to helping your pets through chiropractic care in the same way that chiropractic care helped me and Hogan.
